Martin Peters has Alzheimer's
Very sad.

The FA will ask FIFA to investigate if there is a link between dementia and head injuries in football, following the revelations that three members of England's 1966 World Cup winning team have Alzheimer's.

Family members of Martin Peters, Nobby Stiles and Ray Wilson announced the trio were suffering from the condition. This comes amid growing concerns that head injuries and concussions caused during matches are having severe long-term effects on players.

Also in Italy several players of 60s and 70s have been victims of alzheimer or other diseases like SLA in numbers that are way above the average of the population.
This has also led to investigate in what was the "sport meeicine" at that time when also doping and drugs to enhance performances were given to athletes without cautions and long term worries for their health.
8 players of Fiorentina that played for the club in the begining of the 70s have died or are suffering of SLA, dementia, suspected heart attack or body failures.

The fact the get asked 50 times a day "remember 1966?" Rheir memory has probably got bored of it and made them forget it.

Its an FA conspiracy against us, people have started noticing the dodgy decisions so they are going this route to stop Carroll.

Pedant, fair enough then, so it's CTE that is happening in these cases not Alzheimers, regardless I hope we don't get to the point where heading the ball becomes outlawed?

***I'm not sure about the heading the heavy balls and Alzheimer's connection, plenty of players who were heading the ball a lot i.e. CBs and strikers, haven't got Alzheimer's, maybe it's because they are just getting old?
***

The point is that it is **disproportionate** among footballers of that generation (see also Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which can only be diagnosed post-mortem. The prevalence rate on American Football is truly appalling - well over 80%. And it is what Jeff Astle was rediagnosed with post-mortem)

Concussion, a paper back by jeanne Marie laskas makes for an interesting read. Trauma related disease as a result of blows to the head. The NFL chose to try and ignore his findings . I don't read much, but this was an eye opener.

To be fair McMahon took some heavy hits none more so than when Charles Martin from the Packers body slammed him but I'm still not sure about the Alzheimers connection?

Maybe I'll get it as I headed plenty of those fucking medicine balls but maybe not?

This is a devestating disease not just for people like Peters but for his family too. Hopefully it's not too serious with Peters. He was sitting near me when I last went over there, he looked really well, was having a great time and singing bubbles. He was with a stunning young lady who I assume is his daughter.

Re: Martin Peters has Alzheimer's
Sad for the players, terrible disease, but not sure this can be put down to the balls used just yet, yes there high profile but how many people around the world were playing football in the 60,s and 70,s and now have Alzheimers?

Wont stop the Lawyers and the compensation claims though which is were this is odds on heading, if you forgive the pun....

Glad I saw this before I posted it myself!! I knew Nobby Styles was ill but hadn't heard about Ray Wilson and Martin Peters.

All very sad, they should all have been knighted by now but especially this year as it's the anniversary.

stoneman 11:15 Sun Apr 10
Re: Martin Peters has Alzheimer's
The kind of balls they used were the major factor, very heavy leather ones which when wet were like cannonballs.

Re: Martin Peters has Alzheimer's
Sad to hear.
Wasn't heading the ball said to be the cause of Jeff Astle's ill-health & early death?
It's a big thing in American football as well which is obviously more dangerous for head trauma

Growing concerns?

Think it's been an obvious problem for a long time. Football the last to act as usual.
